"The Lord said to Moses, 'Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward.'"

Exodus 14:15, ESV

Squirrel likes to keep me company when I cook.

Actually, I think he likes to wait around to see if I drop anything on the floor. But it plays into my vanity much better to say that he is only in the kitchen to be by me, so we'll run with that.

Squirrel fit so well on my kitchen mat as a pup; he often preferred it to his bed. Now...not so much. He's still the master of wedging himself on it, but his head or booty - or both - are hanging off it.

It's hard to let go of things, even when we've outgrown them. I get comfortable with my habits and routines; I'd rather hang on to them - and off of them - instead of moving on to something else that might challenge me or force me outside of my comfort zone.

Unfortunately, God is not a lover of comfort zones. He's more like those signs near a steep cliff that say "danger zone." He's not safe, and he doesn't call us to walk safe paths.

...which really sucks because I like safe paths. I like familiar. I like comfortable. I'm a daredevil when I can control it, and when I choose it. It's why I hate roller coasters but spent years doing flying trapeze. I could choose the tricks I tried, when I took off from the board, and when I let go of the bar. I have zero control over a roller coaster.

So let me stay on my little mat, even if I don't fit anymore! I'd rather stay right here than chance that narrow path where God is calling me.

Yet, what I might miss...
