A Clingy Faith

" And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased."

Luke 8:43-44, ESV

Have you ever heard the expression, “he followed me around like a lost puppy?”

Squirrel is not allowed in the bathroom. He also hates feeling left out. Thus, he has learned how to use his nose to shove the bathroom door open. There is no privacy in this househould.

On one hand, I love it. It's nice to feel wanted. On the other hand, sometimes I don't WANT a dog staring at me when I'm indisposed.

Overall, Squirrel isn’t a clingy dog, at least compared to some I have met. He’ll happily sleep in the bedroom while I’m working in the office. In fact, sometimes I’ll make him come in with me because I’M the clingy one.

Then there are other days when Squirrel must be by my side at all times. I’ll go downstairs to get my laundry, and he’ll about kill me trying to take the stairs with me. I'll stand to stretch, and he jumps right to his feet in case I leave the room. I’ll have three minutes between Zoom meetings to grab a glass of water, and he’ll make it take five minutes because he’ll weave in and out of my legs the entire run to the kitchen.

(side note: autocorrect proposed “glass of wine” instead of "glass of water," and, honestly, that sounds like a much better work day.)

I can be both types of "dog" with God. I have days where I cling to Him with a death grip. Then I have days where I'm pretty much doing my own thing, checking in for prayers at meals and before bed, but living the rest of the day in my own head.

It's wonderful to know that it is impossible to be too "clingy" for God. We can never draw too close. Spend too much time with Him. Be too underfoot. In fact, it seems the closer we are to Him, the more pleased He is.

This has been a week of grabbing the hem of Jesus' robe and not letting go. $12,000 bathroom repair because of a leaky shower? Check! Politics and drama at work? Check! Overly fatigued from not sleeping enough? Check, check!

There may be times I get grumpy with Squirrel for tripping me yet again in the kitchen. I've never once heard God get grumpy with me - or anyone - for clutching the hem of His robe too tightly.

So grasp away, and don't let go.
