Making Room

"Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God."
Hebrews 13:16, ESV
I had the bright idea of taking one of my many work calls while sitting with Squirrel on his bed. It sounded soothing and sweet.
It was soothing and sweet...for the first ten minutes. Then it turned into Squirrel inching closer and closer, getting up and circling, then squishing his big fanny as close to me as possible. It was very clearly dog for, "MY bed. Get OFF."
So I did. It's hard to take meeting minutes from a dog bed anyway.
This past week God unexpectedly brought a housemate into my life. I wasn't planning on having a roommate - I honestly felt I was a little past that age and stage of life. But when this lovely young woman asked if there was any chance she could come live with me, God made it apparent in a hundred different ways that this was His will.
It's been an adjustment, but you know what - it's working. Quite well, actually. I love saying "good morning" to someone and having a face-to-face dinner conversation. Even when she's upstairs and I can hear strains of her soft instrumental music while I'm wiping a counter, it's nice to know there is another living being in the house.
Well, another human. There's always been my sweet Squirrel.
It would have been easy to tell this young woman, "Nope. My house. My routine. My space." Believe me, several 2am second-guessing sessions leading up to her move-in date brought many reason to mind of why this was a bad idea.
God's plans are hard. They come with challenges. They ask us to "move over" and give up some of our rights to serve others.
Yet, at the end of the day, I really do believe the blessings that come out of His plans are worth making some room on the dog bed.
