Be Rushed and Know that I am God?

Psalm 33:7 "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him."
I’m always hurrying Squirrel.
I hate it, but it’s true. In the morning, I want to get our walk done so I can start my day. Mid-day, I have limited time to get him outside before I need to join my 3 millionth Zoom call. At night, I’m exhausted, wearing a very sexy combo of pjs and rainboots, it’s storming, and for the love of all things good and holy, WILL YOU JUST POTTY ALREADY?
I feel justified in that last one. What is it about bad weather that slows that boy’s bladder?
Squirrel has no sense of time. The word “busy” means nothing to him. Every leaf is worth exploring, every person on the sidewalk worth saying hello to, and every bug worth toying with before murdering. We don’t rush killing bugs in our household. Oh no, we rip each leg off and nose it around before finally crushing it with our paw, leaving bug guts all over the floor.
“Hey, you said ‘get it!’ Mom! Well, I got it. What are you complaining about?”
I wish I lived more like that. Not the bug part. That’s gross. But I do wish that I lived my life without this constant sense of hurry. As my dad likes to say, “if wishes were horses, beggars would ride.” I’m not really sure what good a herd of horses would be to a beggar, but I think the point is that wishes don’t usually come true. Resolutions, however, are things that can be acted upon.
Let me change my wording then. I resolve to live more like that this year. I resolve to remember that God didn’t create me to slave over a to-do list, nor did he create me to fill my days so tightly that I have no time for enjoyment. No time for Him, or His divine appointments. Here’s to smelling the roses…or dog pee, if you’re Squirrel.
