"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."
Matthew 7:7-8, ESV
The picture above of Squirrel in a pumpkin costume is a few years old; I've since grown wiser and learned that Squirrel is not a "costume-dog." The single cute picture does not disclose the dozens of other terrible photos and the many treats it took to get that one shot...after which he promptly tried to shred the costume. Oh well. We tried.
I have a great neighborhood for trick-or-treating. It's a series of townhouses and lots of kiddos. I think I have as much fun handing out the candy as the kids do getting the candy. They're so polite, and the costumes are adorable.
They also make me feel very old, as I no longer recognize many of the characters, but I digress...
Any other time of the year, we'd feel awkward and shy about knocking on a strangers door and asking for candy...or, really, for anything! But Halloween is when we know that we'll be received at any door with a light on.
Well, my friends - the porch light of heaven is always on. And you are always welcome, even on a random Tuesday in March.
There are no tricks - you can't fool God and, honestly, why would you want to? He sees exactly who you are and embraces that version of you. Costumes are fun for a night, but lifelong pretending is exhausting.
Take off your mask, knock at His door, and receive the greatest, sweetest treat you could imagine.
...yes, it's even better than peanut m&m's. His grace is THAT good.
